Firewheel.JPG (22016 bytes)Stenocarpus sinuatus: is a member of the Proteaceae family in company with the Banksias, Grevilleas and Hakeas. The common name is Firewheel Tree and refers to the shape of the bright orange-red flower heads. The Firewheel Tree will grow to a height of 30 metres. As well as the spectacular flowers, this species has attractive glossy, dark green leaves. The leaves may be simple or lobed.
Stenocarpus sinuatus is a rainforest tree and occurs on the North Coast of New South Wales and southern Queensland.
The Firewheel Tree is often cultivated as a street tree in coastal areas. The flower head illustrated comes from a street tree in Bellingen, a town inland from Coffs Harbour. The flowers appear from autumn to winter.
