Smoke and Vermiculite: We are always seeking better methods to strike cuttings and germinate seeds. It is well known that smoked water will increase the germination percentage of many native species. Smoked vermiculite may have the same magical effect on seed germination. Vermiculite is exposed to smoke and is placed on top of seeds after they have been sown. When seed trays are watered, the chemicals in the smoke are carried through to the seeds. We produce our own smoked vermiculite by placing a sieve containing moist vermiculite over a smoky fire in our incinerator. The sieve is left in position for about 20 minutes. We are trialling smoked vermiculite and will communicate our success or otherwise as soon as we have some results.
